Iain, ive not heard of this before but it could be:

a)power mangement settings are not fully turned off/are not applied propperly.
b)that the system is setup that way in the laptops bios (press del at startup to enter the bios)
c)that your bats on the way out (unlikelly to be honest)
d)that part of the windows install is corupted, a free windoze install would solve this (remmber to back everything up!)
