Go down to your local art shop and ask to see the soft pastel selection, you can get all of the earth colours burnt umber, yellow ochre etc these are much cheaper and will last you for a long time. They are ideal for weathering, you can apply them with a brush picking up the dust, you get very subtle effects for exhausts, dirt lines etc etc best thing to do is use an old model to practise on before you use them on your pride and joy. You can fix the pastel with artists fixative or spray on matt varnish.
