Sorry, my fault.

In traditional cruise companies such as Cunard Line Senior Officers 'Host' tables, i.e. sit with a table of passengers for dinner in the evening. This gives the passengers the opportunity to learn a lot more about the company and life at sea in general from the officer sitting with them.

I met some very interesting people over the years doing this and used to look forward to having a chat with "My" table each evening. In those days the passengers were with us for either one or two weeks so you got to know them quite well over that amount of time.

The trick was ensuring that the conversation included everyone and was guided away from potentially contentious subjects.
