may seem simple but, ive seen lots of ppl where i work slice their hand to hell, so heres a pic of how to hold them properly
use your thumb and middle finger as a pivot on the top and use your forefinger (index) to 'reinforce' the whole thing and you can get a very firm hold of it this way, its the safest way, or just get a blade holder
