The Germans were experimenting heaavily with submarine launched autogiro's,the Flettner and Fiesler company designed and built some interesting intermeshing rotor co-axial designs at the time.
The desperate ideas were for aerial observation purposes of maritime shipping, the autogyro glider versions were simply towed along by the sub and winched in as required.
Some examples of these machines survive in museums and warrant close study.
Many of the Luft46 machines were built as mockups but some were purely paper aeroplanes and never got past the filing cabinet stage, this to me is one of the most intriging periods in experimental aircraft history, many designs such as those draughted by Alexander Lippisch designer of the frightening Me.163 re-appeared post-war as Payen projects that were actualy constructed.
