Get yourself some good quality brushes, expect to pay a couple of pounds each. They are worth every penny and you can acheive some very impressive effects with a simple brush.

As you get more adventurous you might try differrent shapes like I use a flat brush quite a bit when I am deliberately trying to create a surface texture but once again buy good quality.
