Barry defragging will go a lot quicker if you shut down all non critical systems/programs basically only leaving System tray and Explorer, if your staying connected its not a bad idea to leave your firewall and security running but shut down screen savers and backgrounds......
run a search for microsoft back offices program Disc keeper lite there's a free download version .......it can sort out most clogged drives quite quickly minutes but its only manual for the free version.

The real problem seems to come from the build up of registry errors......I think/know thats whats likely to be messing my system up again Ive run a couple of free trials but they wont sort it out after the first run through unless you start paying ..........the search goes on ...I must try suggesting it to Google see if they can add one to their free ware basket.
