| Iain, the problem with a lot of newcomers to model flying, is that they are also learning to build at the same time, consequently their building standards leave a lot to be desired, for example you would never believe the number of flying bananas I have seen ! what is a flying banana ? well it is a model with a built in curve to the fuselage, you are trying to fly left and the thing is constantly pulling to the right making life very difficult for the learner and the instructor,so whilst I agree that building your own is great fun and you have the knowledge and help to get things right, there are many who just do not have the time to build but value their leisure flying time, years ago it was unheard of to find what we know accept as ARTF,but make no mistake about it they are here to stay,in America you can now purchase quarter scale scale models all ready to bolt in the engine and radio, there is a company in the UK selling ready to fly quarter scale Bristol F.2B Fighters, and do they fly well ! So the choice is a personal one,I build but still have a few fun ARTF's to buzz around the park on a fine evening that can be placed into the car quickly.
