Tiger, actually a very valid point and one to think about when painting anything if you are after a realistic finish.

The steam ship I am making comes from a time when spray gear did not exist in ship yards so all vessels from this time would be brush painted. It therefore doesn't make sense to me to spray the hull when the original was never such a perfect finish. I have therefore painted the hull with a small flat brush and deliberately used alternate directions of stroke to emulate the real brushed finish.

You have to think about each application and evaluate the merits of any type of paint finish.
