Yep I will agree with you there Barry,
My first R/C car was also a Mardave back in 1978 and constructed in exactly the way you describe and with a Veco .19 Engine fitted. It went like stink. I had a Zakspeed Team Ford Capri bodyshell on mine as well as a couple of old Formula 1 shells. All hand painted by me then. I do still have some pics of it somewhere and will get them up online.....I had a lot of fun with that car.
I sold it in 1982 moving onto R/C Planes and have only recently returned to cars (in the last couple of years) as my nephew got into them, I ended up doing them for him and finally got me another one as you have seen elsewhere on here.
