| What came before control line ? When Jim Walker submitted his patent for his U-Control system there had been only one real contender in similarity, this was the system of whipline flying, how did this work ? well firstly a position was found on the model that corresponded with the centre of gravity,a strong line was attached here from the wing right down towards the fuselage, the pilot spun the model around his head gradually paying out more of the line,if the propeller was made to rotate some thrust ( and drag ) could be obtained from the windmilling propeller, although the system sounds crude I can testify that it really does work having flown whipline or whip control as a young lad ! my dads cast off models would be quickly modified and pressed into service, some evenings after homework had been done were spent flying the models in the confines of the bottom of the garden with a brick wall periously close by ! this claimed a few models as I stepped beyond the flight platform.
So there is a little known fact that control line flying had a predecessor, amazing what you learn here on scale-models.
