Never seen so many different models of the Carvair ! for those wondering what exactly this aircraft type is let me explain, the Carvair was the brainchild of non other than Mr Freddie Laker, his company was called Aviation Traders Ltd and was based at Southend where he had a large aircraft conversion facility, his idea which worked was to take one standard Douglas DC-4 airliner, chop off the nose and add one bulbeous cargo doored assembly that was literally grafted onto the nose, here the aircraft vecame a car carrier and could be used for transporting both the passenger and his vehicle on his holiday to the continent, the service had already been offered many years before by Silver City airways who flew Bristol Freighter aircraft day in and day out.
Carvair's were operated by many different airlines including perhaps the best known British United airways,I think there is only one extant and that is sitting outside rotting away, and so the end of an era which can only be remembered with our models.
