Not knowing a great deal about engines such as this but based on what you say a smoking engine is possibly running 'rich', i.e. too much fuel.

It is important to note that too much fuel will usually give you a black smoke but too much oil will give you a white smoke.

Too much fuel could be as a result of a problem in the carburation process, maybe a worn needle is allowing too much fuel in or, another possibility, you are not getting enough air so I would have a look at any air filter or air inlet arrangement you may have fitted. Is the inlet blocked by something etc.?

This would give OK running at idle but smoke and poor performance when the throttle is opened.
