I like to think it is not one person otherwise I would feel a bit slow in comparision!!
I often wonder where the very topical jokes come from that inevitably result from a disaster or other main news item, usually identifying a rather sad mind.
When I was at college doing my Chief Engineers ticket in 1987 the big news item was the disaster of the Herald of Free Enterprise. The joke that did the rounds at college at the time went something like this:
A young lad went into a model shop and asked if they had an Airfix model of the Herald of Free Enterprise. The shopkeeper said he wasn't sure but he would go and have a look in his stock room. This is obviously in the days when there were A) Model shops, B) Model shops with stock rooms and C) Proprieters who could be bothered going and looking in them!!
Anyway he came back and said that he had one model left but as the demand was suddenly high and the fact that it was the last one the price was considerably higher than the RRP.
Well unfortunaltely he only had enough money for the normal price but , as the lad particularly wanted this kit, he asked if the proprieter would hang on to it until he could obtain further funds.
"Not a problem lad", said the shopkeeper, knowing a good thing when he was on to one,
"Would you like me to put it on one side for you?"
You have to bear in mind that, at the time, every news item for days showed nothing but pictures of the ship laid on it's side in shallow water.
Students eh, you have to love them!
