Hello Richard
Yes the castings are all done at home both gunmetal and iron. I use a charcoal blast and can melt about 5lbs a go in iron. Its a bit Heath Robinson given that the furnace is a hole in the ground lined with refractory bricks and clay and supplied with air from a broken Dyson vacuum cleaner. (best use for one in my opinion)

On this engine the cylinder block is being machined from a 5x5x5 inch cube of Meehanite cast iron so thats a casting i don't have to worry about thankfully.
