You say its a Dlink? Is a ethernet card showing up in the device manager? If its XP, right click on "my computer", choose properties from the menu then hardware tap up top. Look for any yellow caution symbols. This will at least tell you if any hardware is found. They are extremely specific in not only model numbers BUT versions of the particular model. I'll see if I can do a search for you and hopefully post a link. Also, what brand make and model is this laptop? Sometimes vendors have specific driver restore CD's that have all drivers needed for that type.
