For SS, to try to get a better scale effect if you go for a very dark grey it will look more realistic than pure black. I would tone down a flat black with a couple of drops of dark grey just to take the edge of it. You can then use a slightly lighter mix for the highlights and a darker mix for the shadows but I would still avoid pure black.

For Wehrmacht I would use a dark field grey as a base and mix slight amounts of a medium grey with it for the same range of tomes.
