In the past I used some Britains farmyard figures for a model boat and some hacked 1/32 scale tamiya figures. One had a rather fetching full length leather coat and with a stove pipe top hat fabricated from a length of sprue and a washer looked very much like the owner of the vessel - checking up on his crew!

I remodelled them with milliput donkey jackets and flat caps. From a distance they looked rather good...

Depends what scale you're after but with a pinvice, some brass wire and a liberal supply of modelling putting it's suprise what results you can end up with.

Just look for figures with natural poses and avoid the ones crouching behind a wall or in the archetypal action man, firing the gun with itchy trigger finger look.
