My thanks to all [Gaz,Richard(*2),Alan & Mark] for your help, suggestions & comments, whilst it is not perfect I can live with the grating at the moment. If I was working at the minimum wage I reckon it would have cost £80 for labour, found a U.S. model shop that sells them complete for $3.99 but it wouldn't feel the same.
