keep your eye on eBay. There are loads of cheap two channel sets going for next to nothing. Just make sure you get the correct frequency range for what you want to control, i.e. 27 or 40 Mhz for boats 35 for planes etc.

As you say go for a complete set with servo's and crystals and you won't get bogged down with compatabilty issues then.
