| On the workbench-Concorde,Part 1.
This model of Concorde done by Airfix to 1=72nd scale has been on the go now for a couple of months on my bench,I am on the last stages now with the fine detail bits that go to make any model just that little bit special, when building a model of this size it is best to build everything as modules, checking and trimming as you go along, there were a few problems along the way that had to be resolved the biggest of which was the front section of the fuselage, for some reason this is a slightly larger diameter than the aft section, the only real way round this is to carefully build up the rear portion by wrapping wafer thin plastikard around the blend, then careful sanding and filling does the trick, but you need patience and care.
My model was given a coat of Halfords white primer then four successive coats of Polar white to simulate the high gloss finish of the real aircraft, the decal sheet is a work of art in itself with enough transfers to build any of the British machines at any different period in the aircrafts history, the decals are very frail and thin and need plenty of water plus judicious use of a small paintbrush to smooth out all the wrinkles and stop them folding back on themselves, there is another hundred or so small decals to add to the model in the photograph,I will do a few a day as it is a boring and tedious process cross checking where everything goes !
All in all a magnificent job by the Airfix toolmakers to produce a model in such a large scale and keep the price very reasonable for a model of this size, she will make a welcome addition to my airliner fleet and look good with any display of contemporary aircraft subjects.
More photographs to follow to do her full justice.

This underneath view shows to good advantage the unique and complex wing shape on Concorde, the laminer flow sections have been well reproduced in model form and must have proved a real headache for Airfix toolmakers to get the shape just right, also shown here is the well made undercarriage legs which have piano wire inserts incorporated into them,no nose ballast is needed to keep her nose on the ground, the tyres are synthetic soft plastic and press onto the whhel hubs themselves. For those wanting a stronger undercarriage Messrs Aeroclub are producing white metal casting sets for this model,my model will eventually be retrofitted with these when available.

The unique shape of the engines can be seen in this view, the design and fit of all the assemblies is nicely broken down to make building the model more manageable,it is also advised to paint such sub assemblies before fitting, they can be easily masked up should you wish to spray your Concorde which is really easy as she is basically all white.Once everything is in place and the decals applied a thin coat of Johnsons Klear does the trick to seal everything.

This final view gives an indication of the size of the model ( and the real thing as well ) by comparing it with a Douglas Dakota to the same 1=72 nd scale,I wonder what the Douglas engineers would have thought,if someone had told them that one day would be travelling supersonic with passengers across the Atlantic ?! it is sometimes hard to grasp mans progress in the air and the obstacles he has overcome to make flying even faster and safer,Concorde has truly set itself in the aviation history books forever.
Top marks to Airfix for producing this classic aeroplane in miniature and above all at a price we can afford.

I'm sure you could start your own museum! | *** You guessed it No.6 I wanted my own model museum, the plans were to use some blocked off railway arches at Bridlington on the coast,it would have been an attraction for the town as the only thing they had was a museum with varieties of freshwater fish for people to see when the weather was bad ! everything was in place and then the council put the brakes on it by not allowing me to display a sign anywhere specially as it was off the beaten track, the plan was to spend the summer months at Bridlington taking the punters entrance money and shut up for the winter,British rail were happy to rent out the arches,it was a bitter disappointment but thats life.
Current number of models in collection aprox 1,500 static with aprox 150 flying models of which 30 are airworthy with engines/radio,a further dozen electric models which I love flying when the weather improves.
The collection was also used to raise money for charity at displays etc in the past,I sometimes put on local displays, currently working on a world war II airfield layout for an anniversary event this year, will do some pictures for scale-models when everything is together and completed, you can see what you think of it ?
And before you ask no I do not live in a big house !
