| | Guest | this sounds really stupid- but do they recycle the spent blades?? otherwise surely its a very wasteful process?
And when you say a large probe, do you mean actually hanging from the heli??? Surely the noise of the heli would be enough to move the animal anyway? I live on a farm, which up untill recently was fully working and youd only have to look at some cows and they would just head for the hills so to speak? |

| *** Well unless you can use them as giant paint stirrers they are scrap ! not even salvage.
The probe sticks out of the door apparently,as you say the noise alone would move them, must be for awkward cases.
I envy you living on a farm, with those flying fields etc ! plenty of space as well in those barns. Quote: |

| | All Round Modeller | Yes I remember that news clip of the Bell 47G very well, the cameraman filmed all the way down to his inevitable death...the reason being then those heli's were not capable of autorotations like the more modern machines.
Even today Tail rotor failure can still be a disaster but it does depend on how the heli is being flown at the time, normal forward speed and height and you have a good chance of bringing it on an an autorotation...ie power off to the main rotors to get rid of the torque effect and let the rotors keep spinning and basically bring the heli in like a glider flaring out at the end. If you are in the Hover when the tail goes then this is far more critical as it will depend on the height & airspeed you are at when it goes, if you have enough altitude you may just get away with an autorotation landing, if you are too low, forget it...!! you will crash in...!!!
Anyone remember the RAF Rescue Heli from 22 Sqn at RAF Valley Crashing into Lake Padarn in Llanberis a few years ago...?? They were practically slowing to a hover over the lake when the tailrotor gearbox went and they went down like lead balloons. I remember the news reporters on tv covering it saying the cause of the crash was not known when first reported, but if you watched the footage on tv you could see instantly the tail rotor had suddenly slowed down dramatically indicating classic tail failure...as they were so low the pilot could only try and ditch his machine into the water which he did, the crew survived but unfortunately the poor air cadets on board did not (if I remember rightly 3 of them died)...not so much from the smash but more from drowning after the heli ditched into lake...The Heli then was a Wessex, 22 Sqn changed over to Sea-kings not long after that incident.

LOL, my office is currantly a 20X10foot shed i manged to build over the period of about 3 weeks. Having not lifted a hammer before in my life it was an intresting experience to say the least!
I do love living in the country side but it has its down points- ie: i have a punchure at the moment and the nearest shop is a two mile walk....hmmm no beer for me tonight! |

| Hello Squiffy, good to hear that things are keeping you busy,I have visions of that large shed towering with kits and you in a tiny corner working away ! go for it while the going is good, did you see that programme this evening on internet shopping ? two teams shopped for expensive items, one did it the old way using shoe leather looking for CD's etc,the other team got what they wanted via search engines, guess who came out best ? no real competition and things are going to get tougher, last week I went to one of those old traditional toy shops, behind the counter was an E-bay address,I asked the assistant what it was all about, she told me that since November 2004 they have sold several thousand items of toys, games, dolls etc, speaks for itself really, only the determined will survive the next 5 years by which time it will be bigger and more organised than ever, brace yourself for a competitor to E-bay with more attractions for buyers and sellers than ever before.

| | Guest | Hi Barry and thanks for your kind words!
Ive been going full-hog for my business now and things are going from strength to strength. The mystical website has now been contracted out to a friend of mine which is great as it opens up my time to apply in other areas (ordering new stuf...yay) and i will get a much more polished end result which i feel is very important!
The shed- LOL..... its really more of an office but as i built it from wood i like to call it a shed! Its basically a flat packed oversized garden shed. However i fully insulated it, ply on the walls, laminated floor, electricity, phone and internet are all installed. Its warmer in here than it is in the house some days!
I didnt see that program, although i really would of liked to! Sounds very promising for me. I mean all you need to do is google "model shops bust" to realise that theres very few local model shops still trading now. Most store owners blame the internet for this, and quite frankly i think they are 110% correct. Its obvious that retail is dying and ecommerce is on the up. Thats what makes me so excited about my business is that for once, i think im getting on the band wagon, so to speak, at the right time!
My prime concern in this area though is still to keep the "local model shop" feeling. Thus to say every customer, be they big or small is treated with the same respect. If people want to ring up for a chat as well as to order, then thats fine by me!!!!!!
Ive replied to your PM too :-) |

| | All Round Modeller | Local Model shops are always welcome, always nice to be able to walk into a shop for what you want and there is no reason why they cannot thrive if they have an online business too...more trade for them if they are competitive and can offer a decent service.
I live in an area where there used to be several model shops but now they are few and far between, I do most of my shopping online with the exception to a shop 30 mile plus away to a shop in Wrexham, yes they are online too ...and another recently found shop just 22 miles away. I like having both the options open to me as to how I shop. At the end of the day, It is nice to be able to walk into a well stocked shop, look around and buy all my bits there and then, I usually end up buying loads coz I can see the bits I want and they are all there in stock !!! How many times do you browse a whole web page looking for everything you want..?? It's far much better if you are in a shop that has it all in front of you for you to see...!! and then you come home happy to get on with your model knowing you have got all the bits you need with no waiting for delivery etc....especially when it comes to the small bits and pieces.
