| | All Round Modeller | And another pic showing the masking up done, You can now clearly see all the areas that have to be cut out...except for the large delta shape bit in the middle as that is the centre of the chassis. All the necessary small holes can be cut out after the main shape is cut out.
The big rectangular strip across the top is to be cut off and will be used to make the top radio tray on this chassis.
Cutting can now commence on this one.
Regards.......Mark

| | All Round Modeller | Just to keep you posted,
Have now started cutting the chassis, A Dremel Mini-Drill (or similar) works fine with a carborundum disc, cuts very cleanly but does produce a lot of smoke and fumes, I managed to set my smoke detectors off...!!! Having now aired the place out, I will be finishing off cutting outside. The beauty with the Carb discs is that it cuts a nice clean edge and sands at the same time.
I would certainly recommend Safety Goggles and a Face Mask when cutting this stuff........they are cheap enough in B & Q.
Will post another pic up very shortly.
Regards.......Mark.

| someone on my rc car forum made a shock tower i think out of cf they bought
aparently it makes your drills and saws blunt quite quickly
so i would be prepared for some sharpening of drills |

| | All Round Modeller | Yes agreed,
When I first started cutting this stuff, I used the small circular saw Disc in My Dremel Mini Drill and it did go blunt very quickly. The Best things to use are the Carborundum discs...you can get them in Multi-packs for this drill. (They are like mini versions of the discs you get on angle grinders) I used 2 Different sizes for the cutting and didn't wear these out. They work fine at low speed for starting the cut and then at high speed to finish the cut off...I managed to get nice clean cuts all round requiring only very minimum sanding.
As stated above though, do this in a well ventilated area and wear a face-mask and safety goggles as there is a lot of smoke & fumes generated by the heat from cutting this stuff as well as all the Carbon Fibre dust.
The original instructions I had recommended using a Jigsaw but the blades on those are a bit harsh. I also have a scroll saw but that is really meant for wood cutting and the speed is not high enough.
The Dremel is the best tool, followed by wet and dry paper to smooth off any edges or a file...or even a sanding disc in the Dremel.
I have cut out my basic blank now, ready for final smoothing off, rounding of corners and then I can think about drilling out all the necessary holes for the bolts, engine recesses etc.
Will post pics up as soon as the batteries are charged in my camera.
Regards......Mark.

| | All Round Modeller | As promised,
Camera is now charged up so I have been able to upload the pics,
Pics 4, 5 and 6 show freshly cut plate still with the masking tape on until fine sanding was done on the edges just to smooth everything up. The original cutting disc used in the Dremel gave nice clean straight edges so there wasn't a lot to do here. Pic 6 also shows off the shine on this stuff nicely as you can see the pic from my PC reflecting in it.
You can also see the square plate which is going to used to make the topdeck on this chassis as the plate to house the receiver and battery pack and switch harness. It is a straightforward shape so won't take long to make.
Pic 7 is after smoothing off and masking tape removed. I have rounded off the edges on the wing part of the chassis as can be seen, I will do the corners on the ends once I finish drilling all the relevant bolt holes and engine recess holes. The original chassis will be used as the template for this to ensure accuracy.
The 4 small lugs that you can see are suspension limiters but will not be needed on this car. I will be cutting them off after drilling etc. I have devised a way to fix them back on at anytime if they are ever needed, so cutting them off will not cause a problem.
So tonight Matthew.....I will be drilling holes ...!!!
Regards......Mark.

| | All Round Modeller | Initial Drilling and holes cut out, Minor smoothing off to do and a couple more holes to go on yet but I cannot mark these out until I have bolted some of the components back in place temporarily as this will ensure correct alignment.
This is the first time I have worked with Carbon Fibre but it has been a dream to work with albeit slightly messier with the dust but it beats cutting aluminium anyday. Having the right tools too does help and for the final touches, this stuff files very nicely without too much effort.
I have taken the pic against the light so's to show up the holes nicely
I think I deserve a beer or two now
Regards......Mark
