Steven,
If you can do it, go for it, I got my sheet from www.carbonology.com they produce the right thicknesses and sizes compared to other sites I have looked at and work out cheaper too.

Make sure you have a Dremel Mini Drill or Similar and you will find it a doddle to work with.

For info...My mini drill is not a Dremel but is B&Q's own make...Precision. It is the same size as the Dremel, Can use all the Dremel bits and is variable speed.
A proper Dremel will set you back £70...you can get the B&Q one for £24.95 which now includes a stand and a flexi attachment like you see on the dentists drills which allows for better precision work.
B&Q do boxed sets of accessories for this Drill too, I recently got one on offer for £12.99 which included 80 different pieces for all types of work. The Dremel set was £35 for about 60 pieces.
The B&Q Drill is just as good and has plenty of power...only you aren't paying for the Dremel name.

Regards.......Mark.

Yes I have 2 Mini drills too Steven,
One I have mentioned already, the other is the original COMO Mini Drill as distributed by MFA years ago, I think they are still available. Ok this is not as powerful as the other drill but is ideal for really fine precision work where the slower speed is better. Yes it comes with it's own bits but it also accepts the Dremel bits no problem...The Collets that come with it are suitable for these parts.
I have had mine for well over 20 years now and it still performs fine.

Regards........Mark.

Anyway,

Back to the car, Pic shows partial re-assembly in order to line the engine up and drill out the bolt holes for same. You will notice yellow chinagraph pencil around the square cutout in the middle of the chassis, this marks where the pull start recess needs to be enlarged.
I have a Kyosho Pureten Alpha Gp 2 chassis which already has this hole on it. All I have to do now is line it up with the marks I have made and mark it out to cut. The engine bolt holes will then automatically fall into the right places as the right holes are also on that chassis.

So far the parts have all fitted nicely onto this chassis lining up nice and square with no problems so I am pleased with the result.

More pics to come yet as she all goes back together.

Regards.......Mark

so what are the benifits of a c/f chasis on an rc car? sorry if that sounds stupid but im not into rc cars so just wondering.

i mean obviously its stronger and lighter but on such a small car does it make that much difference?

nice work though, iv been following this thread and its comming along great!

Thanks Richard,

Well the benfits of Carbon Fibre as you mentioned, stronger and lighter and very easy to work with. I was having to make a new chassis anyway and having made one from Aluminium before I decided to try this stuff. I have found it much easier to cut than the aluminium so that was a big plus as it meant the job could be done quicker.

And of course as Carbon fibre is all the rage at the moment, there is always the coolness factor too, bear in mind this car is owned by my 17 yr Old Nephew so he will be the envy of his mates. As for Performance difference, that remains to be seen, I will let you know once the new engine is run in.....every little bit of weight saved though will surely improve performance...as per full size race cars these days

Iain, that is a good suggestion re the shock tower, never thought of that bit, I will probably just have enough sheet left over to do that as well.

Regards.......Mark.

A couple more pics for you showing test fit of all the parts on the new chassis. Larger fuel tank is being fitted on this car and will be fitted very shortly, the old one clashed with the tuned pipe on the GX12 Engine so has been relocated...as pics will show
