| | Scale Model Member | New here I'm the designer of Airwolf and you can thank GW for sending me this way. One note about the Airwolf model is that it's 1/33 scale not 1/48 Like GW said. Just for reference card models, at least in the big scale don't use the standard plastic 1/32. Smaller scales like 1/48 and 1/72 are standard however.
I noticed some of you are curious about the design process of paper models and thought I would post this link to a thread over at www.cardmodels.net http://www.cardmodels.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3316
I'm currently working on a F2G Super Corsair and this thread shows some of the methods used to desing the models.
I use a program called Rhino3D to construct the 3d model and unroll the surfaces.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

| Willja67,that process is simply awesome, questions well where do I start ? lets see if this makes sense, please excuse my ignorance on this process as I know nothing whatsoever about CAD designing, firstly is this the same software that they use for doing the flight simulator models ? so you start obviously with an accurate drawing, and then what ? is this transferred to your programme manually,if so in which way please ?
The amount of internal stuff is just overwealming,so I take it that once the 3D form is on the programme you then rework it gradually building up the skins and internals etc, hope that my questions are making sense here,I find this so intriging.
I guess that what you are using makes my old cut and try methods with the scissors terribly obsolete, but I am just wondering if I would ever get my head around what you are doing there ! it certainly looks excellent for card structures,so how much is Rhino then ?
We will leave it at that for now as there will probably be lots of other questions along the way, just tell me to clear off if these questions are getting on your nerves.

| Howdy Willja,
Glad to see you found us, and I can see you have already got a following, lol, your reputation preceeds you! Something about that photo of the airwolf with the dark cavernous, fade to black shading that gets peoples attention, I figure its because the model looks so much like what most people remembered from the show.
I am really glad you made it here and hope to see you here quite abit.
If you get a chance, show that photo of Nobi's C 130 that you recently showed in the cardmodel thread (exibition tips).
Again, glad you made it,
have a good day,
Greg aka GW |

| | Scale Model Member | Well Wonwinglow the process simplified about as far as it goes is this,
1. Find good 5 view drawings
2. Draw them into the computer
3. If the drawing didn't come with cross sections develope them for the points where the model makes a major change in shape.
4. Use the cross sections to build a wire frame in 3d then loft the sections in between.
5. Unroll the sections you've lofted, and create connecting strips and other necesary items that might not be practical in 3d.
6. Use a graphics program to color the model.
That's the basics obviously it gets a lot more complicated. A member on cardmodels.net who has your name (almost it's Wunwinglow) has some tutorials linked to in his signature that you might find interesting.
@GW I think the C-130 you were talking about is John's (Bowdenja's). |

| Thanks for the explanation Willja67,I get the gist of things now,you will not hold it against me if I continue to draw out parts by hand will you ? I just cut, draw and snip away until they fold into place, then once they fit, draw around them for any final drawings to place on the internet, they must have done it like this years ago anyway as computer technology was not around then?
Interesting stuff, drawing on the screen is not the easiest of tasks to do in any program.

I did it your way until my dad put autocad on my computer and basically continued doing it the same way in autocad until I got my college enrolled brother to order Rhino for me so it only cost $200 U.S. instead of $900. |
