| Airwolf Must See Howdy Guys,
Ok, I recently showed you models like the original batmobile, the ghost busters "ecto 1", The USS Skipjack Nuclear Sub, the USS NIMITZ aircraft carrier card models made from paper.
Well here is another Tv related model, but one that is known worldwide....... I am talking about Airwolf.
This model is a free download availible at http://www.dpileggispicks.com/will_a...olf/index.html
Have a look below:
This model is 1:48 scale and is complete with rocket pod undercarraige, extended winglet tip machine guns and rotating main and tail rotors.
The model was designed by another friend of mine, William Aldridge over at www.cardmodels.net . I had originally found a 3D model of the helicopter, gained permission to use it at a basis for a card model but, then accepted a management position where I work and was unable to complete it. So William took it to task. Unable to use the 3d model on his software, he designed it from scratch, so this is entirely his own design of the famous helicopter with coloring by another cardmodel.net member.
Try It, You'll Like It.
Have a good day,
Greg aka GW |

| Goodmorning Guys,
Well, its six a.m. here, I woke up at 4 am Since that was the time I had been having to take pain pills, but since my epidural shot yesterday, I am in no pain at all, I just hope it lasts.
Ok, first the jknight rider car.....I know where a cardmodel corvette is, but its not a knightrider....but then again, the red "dot" in the grill is pretty much what makes that car lol. As for the others rj mentioned, I am unfamiliar with Capt. Scarlett, and only vaguely aware of supercar.
However................the same designer, Claudio Diaz, who designed the Batmobile and the "Ecto 1" will soon release the Mach 5 from the late sixties cartoon "Speedracer".
The reason I am aware of this is because I have an aquaintance/friend who is a radio talk show host here in the USA, His name is Russ Martin (his show can be googled), anyway, Russ Owns an actual Batmobile and a replica of the Mach 5 and currently distributes the batmobile models at parades, car shows etc. and will soon be doing the same with the mach 5 models when that automobile of his is on "the road" at shows and paades.
I will look and see if I can find a model of "super car" and I will read up on captain scarlett, but I really dont think there are card models of those vehicles out there unless they are commercial kits.
Anyway, dont worry I will be presenting more free cardmodels (Eventually I will come across one that one of you will build....and then you will be hooked and maybe take some photos).
Ok gotta go eat somethingfor breakfast, have a good day,
Greg aka GW |

| That Airwolf is a neat bit of card model designing,do you havbe any tips Greg on designing these models ? is it sometimes a case of cut and try several times before the shape evolves, for example circular cones that have double curvature etc, some of these downloads must have taken the designer weeks, months, years to perfect, they really are a labour of love.
I see that Fiddlers Green suggest using Rice Crispies for wheels on their models ! touch the crispie with cyano and it becomes like rock.
Reminds me of when I used to use macaroni for exhaust stacks on small fighter aircraft, you need to match up the macaroni pieces, and why not ?

| Howdy Barry, Richard,
Ok, first to address Barry's questions. Most card models today are first 3d computer models although some "old schoolers" still draw their models on paper and use rulers, protractors and slide rules. One that comes to mind righ away is Rob4 6 (Rob Carleen) over at www.cardmodels.net . He lives in pensecola, Florida, home to the Blue angels and the Pensecola Naval air Museum. He goes to the museum, takes photos and measurements of the aircraft and makes notes, then goes home and manually draws out the parts much like an engineer would design actual aircraft parts. And after weeks of this, he comes up with a prototype or "beta" build as they are called now a days. His work can be seen at www.fiddlersgreen.net .His designs include the F 100 super sabre , the fF 84 Thunderstreak and many others. Of course all of those models are now for sale at that website.
As for the designers who use computers to design their models, there are many different design programs, Rhino, Metasequioa, Anim8or, etc.. and then there is the unfolding program which "unfolds" the 3d model so it can be printed and cut out.
One of my Favorite designers which uses computer programs would be NOBI, the owner of www.thaipaperwork.net . Nobi is from Thailand, speaks english pretty well, but its not his native language. But when it comes to designing models, there is really no language needed. The models speak for themselves. NOBI is known for his great informational tutorials over at www.cardmodels.net . You can usually tell what his next project will be because he will give a tutorial on how he went about designing it and also he answers questions from the members as he makes his posts in the forum.
Personally, having been the senoir machinist where I work for the last 20 yrs until I recently took a management position, I like the "old School" methods although I do also use the "Anim8or" 3d design software (free program download and instructional .pdf file at http://www.anim8or.com/ ). And for the Unfolding I use "Pepakura designer" free download at: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ .
Now as for complex compound curves, nose cones etc.. there are several little speciality programs that figure up all the "plotting coordinates" for these.
But the most helpful thing I have found on the net for people who design cardmodels is...............other people. Nothing beats first hand knowledge, and forums like the cardmodels forum are a great meeting place where designers and novices alike can share their experiences and design problems.
John opened up a Cardmodels section in the forum today and I am going to try to get some of the guys over at www.cardmodels.net to join over here and contribute to the conversations not only on cardmodels but it the conversations in general. Some may be designers, others may just be hobbyist, but I am sure some will gladly come and join us here.
Ok, now onto Richard...... I can speak with Claudio Diaz (designer of batmobile and "ecto 1")and see what he has on the table right now, the captain scarlett and super car ideas are right up his alley. As for the Thunderbirds, was this the "stop motion" animated series of the late sixties? If so, I believe there are some models of that out there.
I will look and see what I come up with. I do know where models are of some older tv shows like the Robot from "Lost in space", a Darleck from "Dr Who", a Flying sub from "Fantastic voyage" etc..etc.. if you want some of those links in the meantime, let me know and I will post them.
Ok, I havent written this much in a while, I need a break lol.
bbl, have a good evening,
Greg aka GW |
