| | Scale Model Member | Designing The Dassault SuE I thought I'd have a go at designing my own paper model.
From my research it follows 3 stages. - Prepare 2D drawings.
- Build 3D model
- Unfold 3D to 2D for printing & building.
There are many sub stages within the above but I like it simple.
He some pictures as I reach the end of stage 2. SuE SS004.jpg SuE SS005.jpg
All I have to do now is learn how to unfold.

| Howdy JT, Well, allow me to help you out abit. I assume you have the 3d model on your computer, if so, this is gonna be real easy for you. There is a program that I use to unfold 3d models called Pepakura, you can find it here: Pepakura Designer . Its a fairly simple program, you simply impport your 3d design into the program and after pushing a few buttons, it unfolds it for you. I dont have it on this particular laptop yet or i would be abit more specific as to what you do, but its really that simple. It will lay out the cut parts on a piece of paper in the best way that will allow all the parts to fit. Just go to the link above and on the left you will see download, click it, on the next page, you want the 'designer" thats the one to download. Now you wont be able to save the unfolded files, but you can print them out and then scan them if you wish to mass produce them. Anyway, the plane is looking great so far, i hope this helps, greg aka GEEDUBBYA |

| | Scale Model Member | Hello Greg.
My reseach led me to pepakura and I have it ready on the PC.
The 3D model was created in MetasequoiaLE. Pepakura will load Meta files in thier native format so no "save as" required.
Initial trials show poor results. Pepakura tried to unfold as a single sheet of paper. I believe the software can section my 3D model which will improve things.
I'll post results when I have them.

| Howdy again JT, One More program you might like to try as far as 3d modeling is concerned is called "Anim8or" . You can find the free download of the program here: Anim8or Free 3D Animation Software It not only does 3d models, but you can save in a number of formats and even animate 3d models in the program. It also allows you to open most and 3d type format including .iwo, .3ds, etc... t also has a 100 page .pdf instruction booklet that you can download too. There are even tutorials that can be downloaded and viewed. Its a quality program and you cant beat the price "FREE"! You can save the files and if saved in the proper formats, you can transfer them to pepakura also. have a good day, Greg |

| JT,
In Pepakura Designer there's an icon that looks like like a blue square with a zip. If you click on this icon, in the 2D view if you click on the edges when they are green it will "unzip" them, if the line is red when you click it, it'll reattach it to the adjoining edge.
If you want to make your own paper models from a 3D computer model. You can use this software Ultimate Unwrap 3D - UV mapping software to unwrap the model and make texturing in photoshop easier.
Hope that helps,
Alan

That was my 4th attempt to produce a model. When I got stuck I'd start a new one, learn a "work around" than go back to the previous models, progress them until I got stuck again. It was just luck I finished this one first. Remember to save often and give each save a version number so you can always go back. Good luck.
Greg.
I'll DL and check it out, thanks.
Alan.
Thanks for the Pepakura tip. I'll spend the weekend reading some tutorials to get me started. Unwrap 3D looks smart, I've DL'ed the demo and will give it a run sometime. The price isn't to bad with the exchange rate as it is at the moment.

| | Scale Model Member | I though I'd go ahead and throw the Dassault SuE into Pepakura.
Result: Too many faces (# of faces 1134). It may take a very long time to assemble.
Any advice for the model. Should try and reduce the number of faces?
