East Fortune airshow cancelled due to G8 summit.

Airshow 05 scheduled to take place on the 9 July at the Museum of Flight, East Fortune, has been cancelled due to uncertainty over the availability of airport facilities as a consequence of the G8 Summit being held in Scotland during the previous week.

After careful consideration and advice from BAA plc, the police and other authorities, the National Museums of Scotland (NMS) has cancelled the event, which has previously been supported by Edinburgh Airport through the generous provision of holding space for historic aircraft in the days before the Airshow as well as landing and take-off facilities. These facilities may not be available this year due to aircraft movements associated with the G8 Summit.

Plans are already underway by NMS to put additional resources into a World War II Weekend at the Museum on 4 and 5 June, arranged as part of the national events programme marking the 60th anniversary of VE / VJ day. This will now include an enhanced flying display involving historic military aircraft.

Dr Gordon Rintoul, Director, National Museums of Scotland, said:
“We have assessed all the factors involved in holding this event and took the view that because of the uncertainty involved it was better to cancel the Airshow now before tickets go on sale, rather than go ahead with preparations only to be forced to cancel at a late stage. This would have created much greater disappointment for members of the public.

“We are sorry that regular visitors will miss out on the Airshow this year but hope to welcome them to one of the many other family event days planned at the Museum of Flight during 2005, in particular to the flying event on 4/5 June. Planning will begin immediately for a bigger and better Airshow in 2006.”

That was a story from the Edinburgh Evening News, Saturday 2nd April 2005
What do you think?

thanx for that barry , i hadn`t yet heard of this.

seem`s a shame after all the years that the airshow has been held.

There will be many many disappointed people.

is this the start of what you mentioned in another thread about the CAA ?

*** Adz I think this is a situation whereby they are afraid that facilities for the summit will be in jeopardy, its a conflict of interests in this case politics vesus an airshow.
The CAA regulations and new charges will be felt next season when they will bite hard into the sponsors pockets, most of the larger airshows will carry on but the lesser mortals who organise small events will be the ones who suffer and find it impractical to carry on.
In East Fortunes case it is just unfortunate that the two events clash and vie for airspace, once again the CAA stipulate that a licenced airfield requires certain coverage ie fire, air traffic control etc the airspace in your area is pretty busy at the best of times.
As you say it is a great shame and hopefully the other event will make up for it.
I remember your excellent pictures from the last one Adz.
