      One for the Boat fanatics.

Having seen Richards handy work the other day and just like you Tank guys did, he got me hooked. Here is the kit I'm looking at building when The Old Dutch is complete. I know this is quite a way off at the moment but this has to be purchased and placed in the workshop. I'm also following Richard on this one and will fit the steam plant. Hope you will enjoy this thread when it comes around. The Ship is 54" long and weighs 12 pounds when completed

If this one isn't available I'm also looking at the Titanic, a huge kit that is made up of 5 separate and individual kits.

I've seen a couple of these built, the Vigilant is a fantastic boat and very time consuming but what a model

This is my scratchbuilt baby coastguard cutter, no steam engine though, it's electric

      Cheers, Andy

I'm not a fanatic, but after building my 1/35 crab boat i have a healthy respect for the avid boat builders, and my interest has broadened to include floating things.
Those models you've shown are really nice, i must say i would go for the happy hunter myself.

And Andy (gh) i agree with Andy (sky) ... thats a tidy scratch build mate.

There are plenty of manufacturers of superb boat kits out there, all suitable for radio control and even steam plant operation. I do steam plant testing for my model boat club so to see someone taking on a Vigilant with steam plant puts quite a smile on my face.

No one is saying it will be easy Andy but there are plenty of resources available and lots of advice from model boat clubs etc. I would recommend buying Model Boat Magazine as they do a very good monthly column on steam plant in model boats and regulary include other model boat steam articles.

Just to whet your appetite this is how the Ben Ain is now looking. Still a lot to do but the end is actually in sight! The great satisfaction in such a model is carrying paint and weathering techniques from the plastic model world into the arena of Radio Control boats where you could be using wood, plastics or even metals of various types in your construction.
