| Home thoughts from Abroad Well everyone as we approach yet another Christmas we once again reflect on the past year. We have lost a lot of people such as Richard Whitely and Ronnie Barker and a lot of families have been blessed with new members.
As for myself, I have my wife (and Mother) with me so for us it is always what we make of it together. We may be a few thousand miles away from home but we finish another year with our health and happiness intact and a few models have progressed a bit along the way.
Probably most interesting is that I have found a group of friends that I have never even met yet we have shared our thoughts and views in a way that makes me feel a part of this forum in a very short space of time.
As a parallel I once joined a local aircraft club but never felt welcome. I wasn't helped so I always stood on the sidelines watching and getting frustrated until I had a go myself and, not suprisingly, wrecked my untested pride and joy. Since then I found the Kirklees Model Boat club and was instantly made to feel welcome by a group of stangers who couldn't do enough to assist newcomers.
Forums are a bit the same, I tried Model Boat Magazine forum only to find too many people quick to criticise and put people down before they even knew who they are or what thier experiences have to offer.
Here however I find a group of unbeleivably diverse individuals who all just seem to enjoy having a chat and offer whatever is required to people new to any area of our hobby without any angle of "I know better than you".
I want to thank you all for your welcome, advice, conversation and time and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
All the best
Richard

| | All Round Modeller | Yes I can agree with Bunkerbarge though on his experiences, have been there and done that myself too and it is always nice to find somewhere where you are welcomed with friendly advice on hand.
Unlike some other Forums which I flatly refuse to post on now, because of the so called experts on there who will do their best to shoot your suggestions down in flames...having never tried or considered them.
That is not what this Hobby is about, It's about enjoying it and being able to share it with like minded people.
I have been on here almost a year now and would wholeheartedly recommend the site to anyone thinking of starting in the hobby. We have an excellent range of modellers here of all types and interests, some of us do more than one type and the advice is constructive and friendly.
Thats the way it should be....otherwise we would never get the newcomers in to keep the hobby alive.
So we are now faced with a New year creeping and more new models to see on here I hope !!! Lets keep it going and get those members in.
Best Wishes to you all.

| Mark,
I couldn't agree more.
Nigel,
Well done for spotting the deliberate mistake, well it is Christmas! I'd better edit it to save further embarrassment.
All the best guys |

Disapointed to hear or see that you weren't too pleased with the Model Boats Forum. I have had a lots of help from it over the years. If you ask for help you will always be kinda open to a little attack from somebody. Even here you were corrected on a named person. Take it with a pinch of salt and do have another go with Model Boats Forum. You will need to break the ice with a lot of future friends on that Forum. Kayhem I think is the name of the chap in charge, I believe. So watch for his posts. He even critisized my english on a post but he didn't half get a direct reply remineding him it wasn't an English class I was attending. Been good as gold since.
Good Luck
Martin

| Seaspray, I appreciate your thoughts but I go by experience. I know that any corrections on this forum are given in a friendly way, I've had enough communications with enough people to know that. The experiences I had on Model Boats were from people who had a condescending and know-all attitude from people who didn't know a thing about me. I realise that they may be in a minority but they spoilt the experience for me completely.
I have many years modelling experience that am happy to share with anyone who is interested but I am not going to put up with someone having a go at me for making a suggestion that they did not agree with. When I pointed out that the forum is supposed to be an open freindly arena and that this guy was out of order Kayem jumped to his rescue.
Far too full of themselves for me. I watched one guy come out with a very basic question that was very naive and everyone jumped on him for asking it. Result? he won't ask a question again and the forum will have lost another contributor and maybe even modelling will have lost another person. That forum needs to learn that there is no such thing as a stupid question and the experienced guys need to get off thier high horses and stop thinking that they are the only ones who know how to do something.
I think I'll stick with an open, friendly, constructive forum that I actually enjoy reading and contributing to.
Thanks for the message anyway. |
