Angry Scrooge Alive and Well

Hi All,

Thought I'd share this little gem with you all. Letter from our HR Director which arrived by email two days before Xmas payout due. I say no more.....

"HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT

The process of sharing and understanding the remits of Wolseley UK’s first comprehensive employee attitude survey is now well underway within each business area and action plans to address local challenges are beginning to take shape. If you have not yet had any feedback from your manager about the outcome of the survey, this will happen in the very near future.
We have also been absorbing your feedback at a UK company level. There are clearly some concerns, in particular around pay and benefits and the way people feel they are kept informed about issues in the business that affect them and their jobs. Whilst four out of five employees told us that they are either fairly or very satisfied with their job, there is clearly room for improvement in these and other areas if we want Wolseley UK to be regarded as one of the best employers in the UK.
The review of our benefit structure is a substantial piece of work, which is just getting underway. However, as part of this, it has been decided to discontinue the current tradition of paying a taxable £100 staff bonus at Christmas. Whilst it is accepted that this was seen as popular by some of our people, the Board felt that we should try to make some early changes to address one of the major concerns that many more people have expressed. It is hoped that, even with the loss of the Christmas Bonus, this other change to Wolseley’s terms and conditions will prove beneficial to even more of our people.
This is why, that with effect from the new holiday year starting on 1 January 2006, the basic holiday entitlement for all our people will be raised from 20 to 23 days a year, rising to 25 days on completion of just two full years’ continuous service. This represents a significant value-adding improvement in benefit for a large number of our employees, who, under the current holiday scheme, must complete 15 years’ service before qualifying for their 25-day entitlement.
From the beginning of next year, therefore, this means that everyone currently on less than 23 days holiday will move up to the new basic 23-day entitlement and everyone with two years’ service or more and who are currently on less than 25 days holiday will move up to the new 25-day entitlement.
The Board and the wider management team will continue to review and respond to your feedback. I am sure you will agree that this first step in significantly improving holiday entitlements is a strong and positive indication that we are committed to taking seriously the views that so many of you have shared with us.

BOB MASON
HR Director

PS Phot now in gallery section (at least I hope it is)

Regards

Chris

My xmas bonus is the same as last year, nothing the boss does lay on a xmas party for staff and their partners which is free food and wine, you have to pay for beer spirits, but this year they made us pay a £10 each deposit that they would give you back on the night so I paid £20 for me and the wife it's not till the 7th of Jan but it turns out we might not be able to go now, no one to look after my son, so this year it looks like I've gave them £20 because I don't think he will give me it back

I must say that my former employers were uncommonly generous in this respect. We all used to receive a 3% bonus - as long as you weren't under any disciplinary warnings - plus a £10/head donation towards the departmental Christmas lunch. Even now - having retired - £20 vouchers still arrive with their compliments.
They certainly lived up to their 'Caring and Sharing' motto.

we got a christmas hamper this year, bottles of wine x 2, a bottle of port, box of biscuits, marmalade, chocolates, shortbreads, some posh crisps and nuts, tinned salmon, and a load of other stuff, !- plus the firm pays for a big christmas party for us and partners......

very lucky i think, in addition if we hit financial targets through the year the company holds ' thankyou events' last year it was one of those executive type play days, quad bike racing and clay pidgeon shooting and archery and outdoors stuff....
we also get financial bonuses with our annual wage reviews in april...... plus we get 25 days as standard for holiday .......i cant compalin,
