has anyone ever made that huge revell HMS vitory?

if so, how complicated was it, how did it turn out....and do the supply all that string for the ropes/rigging...etc?

Nearest I came to it was the Airfix one.

If you want to have a go at a sailing vessel it is best to start with something simple to get you interested. The Victory is a complicated ship and any model will take you a long time and if you find it isn't to you liking it will become a chore.

If I was to have a go at a sailing vessel again I would be tempted by a wooden kit of a small ship. The finished item in wood looks superb and the rigging is a lot simpler than the big ships. Have a look around and see what takes your fancy but I would start simple.

but i love the vitory, i must have been to see it about 5 times! (and its a long way away from me) perharps a smaller scale one?

If that's what turns you on then don't be put off but just be aware that you are taking on a big project that will take a lot of hours to do it justice.

I wouldn't bother with the Airfix one, the detail on the hull is very over done and unrealistic so probably the Revel kit is the one for you. If you need some more pictures I posted a few in the gallery from my last visit.

I have to admit, being a seafarer myself, walking around her decks gets the goosebumps going a bit.

It is complicated, but with care and time produces a model that is not too bad.

I would suggest a decent reference material is a must, try Anatomy of the Ship Victory by John Mackay, published by Conway Maritime Press. Also I would not use the yellow colour Humbrol suggest, the model looks too much like a bumble bee in those colours. Humbrol do a tan colout that is more akin to the colour she is the dock, I think it might be number 84 but I'll check it out for you if you go ahead.

There was a thread on the yellow colour on the Victory not too long ago.

I would highly recomment the Nelsons Navy range from JoTika which are specifically created for these and are the best colour matches you will ever get for ships of this period.

If you get a Model Boats magazine they always have an ad in there.
