Digital cameras

Hello all, I am thinking of buying a new digital camera. Either A Fuji Finepix S5600 (SLR styled single lens) or a Nikon D50 (SLR with interchangable lenses)OK I know there is a major price difference of over £300. What I'd like to know is does anyone have particular experience of either camera? Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

hi jim.
N0.6 uses a d70,with no complaints what so ever.i believe the d50 is of the same ilk.but bear in mind the cost of additional lenses.otherwise D50 everytime!

How much you looking at for the Fuji? I can get Fuji through work, although we don't buy them in quantity's so don't get a massive discount on them I still might be able to save you a few quid

OOOOOO a camera thread...where do i start?

It all depends on what sort of pictures your aiming at! The finepix is a great camera but slightly limited when compaired to full DSLR's! One will find that its great for "snap shots" and never really takes a bad photo, but once you get really into it you will want the extra options that the finepix just doesnt give!

The D50 is an AMAZING camera and good value for money, the body is well build, the ccd is very sharp and its filled with soooo many options its unlikelly you will actually use them all! It is basically a D70 minus a few features, but as your not a power user i doubt you would notice! (the D70 also turns on slightly quicker..)

As Chris said, Lens can be expensive and addictive (i cant pass a cheap lens up!). Also you may want to buy a UV filter as these are very useful for getting correct colours and stopping anti-gammut colours!

I would strongly advise that if you considering a DSLR to go down that route as the finepix will be great for the first few months but when you want to advance your photo skills it will hamper you!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LOOKING AT THE KODICAMINOLTA 5D, as its cheaper than the D50, has almost the same amount of features and at the moment comes with a lens package including an 80mm carl zesis lens! Its won numerous awards and is reccomended as the best starter DSLR on the market. Having used D50's, DSC's, Fuijis etc i cannot find a bad thing to say about this camera, and i will not be selling mine for a long period yet! (well maybe when 15mp comes out!)

A good place to start looking is www.ebuyer.co.uk < they are cheap, fast and have good after sales service, your likelly to save at least £50 here over, say, jessops!

Im going to shutup now because i could bleat on about cameras all day, pity i cant use them!

Hi guys thanks for the replies, am still waiting to fid out how much of a bonus we get in April / May and have already allocated how much I think I'll be getting. If the figures stack up I'd be able to spend about £600 tops which could bring the Nikon D50 into view with an extra lens. Failing this expectation the Finepix 5600 is readily available both locally and on the net at £215 to £230 which is not a bonus related expectation.
I really rue the day about 6 years ago when I sold off all of my 35mm Olympus cameras & lenses, the kit encompassed practically every model of camera including an OM-1, OM-4, OM-10, OM-20, OM-40 then the lenses from 17mm fisheye 24mm, 28mm, 28-80mm 35-105mm 50mm 70-210mm up to a 500mm Tamron mirror / reflector.
Adz, seeing the results of No.6's photgraphy again makes you want to strive that little bit harder, maybe I should just save up for one if the expectations fall through.

p.s. Does anyone want a comprehensive darkroom kit of full colour photo + b&w processing equipment. Since I moved out of my parents home 20 + years ago it has not been touched, a shame really. It isn't worth much now I'd expect and could be had for a reasonable offer.

That's a fair old selection Jim. I still have an old OM-10 with a couple of spare lenses in the attic that served me well for so many years I have never had the heart to part with it.

I have been wondering whether the latest Olympus with the removable lenses would be compatable with the old lenses I have. I'm going to have a look into it but the E-10 I have now does most things I want of it. I just wish I'd waited for resolution of the E-20!!

I very much doubt they will fit to be honest, as it all depends on how recent the lens is really!

Jim- did you have a look at the minolta? ive yet to see a bad review about it and will eat my hat is someone can proove me wrong!

Spend less on body and more on lens...YAY

Hello all, well we've decided to push the boat out a bit. For our summer holidays we were not going to odo anything extravagant so, holidaying in the North of Scotland (close to home) and have purchased a Nikon D50 c/w 18-55mm & 55-200mm lenses. WHAT CAN I SAY!!! Absolutely fantastic

super rendition and so easy to use. Well worth splashing the cash on this one for sure. Purchased off of the web and on a two day delivery with most excellent communication and clarity of sale. Attached is a shot taken this evening from the back of the house , of a yacht heading northwards up the coast. i hope you enjoy this one.

Lovely stuff Jim. I am just getting the hang of my new Canon 30D and absolutely loving it. When I go back to the states I think a couple of lenses may be in order but the quality of the pictures is amazing with the basic lens.

You can't beat a new toy and you have a cracker there.
