English Navy

Anyone who knows me also knows I have a dislike of folk who think being GB/UK citizens means we all are English.

I had a look at the website Duncan posted link to and found he had a great model ship which I had seen on TV. yet had not realized was his.

The link says it is an Aircraft Carrier which was once in the ENGLISH NAVY. Which made me wonder when the English Navy as an entity, ceased to exist.

Now I could use the web to answer this. But, how many of you can answer the question without having to do a reference search?

Hi, Flytilbroke I could be partisan and say that the "English Navy " if there was one before would have ceased to exixt with the 1707 act of Union. However I'm not too sure if there was a recognisable force as such at that time so I'll leave it to the historians.

cheers

Jim

I know the "Mary Rose" was an English Navy war ship and I would have expected the English Navy as such to have gone when Cromwell took over from Charles 1st so I recon we are looking at around 1700.

Bob I took the gaff up with the webmaster when it first appeared but ....! 5 or so years later it is still there. John Paul Jones knew the answer to your question. Being a Scot he knew how to found a navy or two (USA and Russia) and what about Nelson`s "England expects" signal. Half his crews weren`t Enlishmen, a lot of his captains were Scots ...end of rant before I`m accused of being a raving Scottish Nationalist. Raving ,perhaps but....! Bob I`m amazed that you didnt know about my carrier. I`m sure we have discussed "the boat", the purpose of the deck-size concrete rubber-matted practise strip and my constant selection little planes at the flying field at Rothiemurchus. We`ve been at cross purposes during our chats, and why it never appears at Loch Insh Splash-ins anymore. The deck landings attempts were a feature there. A local ex wwII Spitfire pilot presenting the prize etc.

Big J There certainly was a Scottish "Royal" Navy, the Scottish Kings built large prestige ships and were allied to the French and Dutch navies of the period. The Act of Union almost certainly ended all that as you say. Any Naval historians amongst us ? I`m sure Cromwell needed a Navy too, just took the "Royal" title away until the Restoration. How did he get his forces to Ireland for example ?
