| Is model making a purely male orientated pursuit? OK a controversial topic this one... Do women actually make Airfix kits?
I've been to a lot of slightly musty smelling Model Railway Clubs displays in church halls, Weekends at boating lakes with R/C models, Model engineering shows with outstanding works in miniature...models shops selling plastic kits of every description...collections of painted lead figures etc.
There seems to be an odd coincidence in each of these above areas...
They are almost completely frequented by men in cardigans...or men who are too young to wear cardigans but aspire to one day be old enough to wear cardigans.
This may not be a bad thing however the other day I asked the question - has a woman ever made an airfix kit, the second question what was the model of....was it one of those Bird kits airfix used to make or was it some WW2 Panzer or anti tank gun?

| The answer is a resounding yes ! many women make plastic kits and not just those Airfix robins and Henry VIII th either,I have spoken to many women model builders who make aircraft, tanks, ships etc etc.
And really good model builders at that, was looking at a Bleriot monoplane only a few weeks ago made by a charming young lady from Leicester, and another lady used to run the junior section of the IPMS.
We have our very own Charlotte here who builds big models such as bombers,so whilst they perhaps are not always in the forefront or limelight they are I am pleased to say active model builders.

| | Short, Balding bloke | I'm not sure if this counts, but my daughter only made 1 airfix kit and said it was 'rubbish and it don't fit propely anyware!' (Hawker Hunter 1/72) , as shuch will now only make mods of tamiya, hasagawa, some revell and acadamy, she makes aircraft, ships and space related models,(mostly with my advise and a bit of help, but she seem's to love modeling)
So if she count's thats another one.
Cheers Jay
P.S. She has her own 3FT perkassa R.C. Boat but she did not make that as it was aquired S/H.

| | Scale Model Member | My 7 year old daughter started on models this year. She is on the level 1 skill snap tights and not painting, but she loves it. I help her out a bit, but as we do more models, she is doing more. She flat out loves it. She is into cars, but she made her first ship recently. It was the USS Iowa. I also caught her drooling over the USS Lionfish that I just got in the other day. That might be the first model I let her start doing some painting and glueing on. But yes, there are females that are into it.

| I just want to make it clear to everyone that I do not wear cardigans, do not have an anorack, I am not a proud owner of a Whippet and I do not keep a Ferret down my trousers.
Just in case you weren't sure!!!

Bob | And you cannot find a better way to build those all important relationships with your family than making something together.
Make the most of it, I am very jealous!
