Question from Indian student ?

Would anyone have any ideas,or care to answer this one please ? it is a little vague, perhaps someone here reads it a little different.

Hello Sir

I m a Mechanical Student of 2nd yr doing my B.tech at RVCE , Bangalore , India. RVCE is Ranked 1st in bangalore (Silicon Valley of India) , is among the Top 10 Colleges in India.

We are having a Fest in our Mechanical dept and one of the events comprised of Aero Modelling. I am the in charge of it. We got some tream who will be provided with Card Board and stuff and the team have to come up with a good Aero Model made out of Card Board.

I would be glad if u could enlighten me for The technical specification and the rules that could be set for such events.

Prizes 1. Best Flite duration in Air
2. Best Concept

Thanking you
Anand.

I get the impression that, never having done it before, he is looking for someone to help him with a suggested set of parameters that the models have to be made to.

Such things as, maximum length, maximum wing span, maximum weight would all be obvious ones but maybe, if they were to be powered, then a standard motor and battery could be given to the competitors. I think that is the type of thing he is after.

Maybe you could help with specifics, being considerably more familiar than myself with such things.

I wonder if "cardboard" doesnt mean what we would refer to as a "paper aeroplane". There is a competion (distance/ duration?) for this somewhere in UK and possibly USA. There is also PAA style payload comp for University (or similar establishments) that have to design conventional style models that are weight-lifters. Cant remember sponsors or any other details. Bunkie`s idea of limited span, standard motor etc seems good start. No rules against deltas or tailess or canards. They should come up with a " Bangaladore Formula" that might go international.

Thanks Bunk and Duncan,it is funny howe we all read things in a different way,but now we have some ideas, yes now I remember that PAA Loader thing sponsored by Pan American Airways.
So to give him a kick start the next post will have something that revolved around an old club night competition session,it could easily be kept flexible and adapted depending on the type and size of materials, thanks chaps.

Perhaps a suitable competition could be organised around the following ideas-
1/ A standard sheet of 1/16th by 4 inch sheet of balsawood could be supplied to each contestant, together with a tube of balsa cement,a razor blade, steel rule and a few pins plus some modelling clay for ballast to get the c of g ( centre of gravity) correct plus a few square inches of glasspaper,a set time limit could be set,say 2 hours for building.
2/ The models are then test flown for which quarter of an hour is allowed, once the trimming has been done the models are numbered and set aside.
3/ The object is to see what sort of duration the models can achieve following a missile like launch indoors or out of doors as decided.
4/ A reliable stop watch and judge, plus helper are nominated, the judges decision is final.
Variations on the above are a set design, each person traces out from card templates of a successful fully tested model, the contest then is to see who can adjust and trim out his own model, weight reduction is allowed but the wing area etc needs to remain the same, the skill is finding ways to make the model fly better, then a competition can begin.
Paper, card, balsawood, ceiling tile foam panels are all possibilities,as the person in charge you need to decide.
Anyway thats some ideas for starters, why not let us know how things go and send along some pictures ?

Out of curiosity I punched "paper plane competition" into Google and was surprised at the number of sites. www.redbullpaperwings.com and www.omniwing.com are a couple worth a look. Of course "paper"for our Bangaladore friend could be corrugated paper which has been used successfully for normal glo powered models. Another route for cheapness is foam-board or packing foam.

Howdy Guys,

Have no fear Tiger, I havent left you guys, I started back to work and its really beginning to cramp my free time lol.
Ok, I have read the letter and its clear as mud to me lol.
Here is what I got out of it, he is in college and a mechanical engineering student and as part of a "festival" the engineering dept. there will be a model airplane competition, models made of "cardboard".
Now, literal "cardboard" (AS IN CORRUGATED) or "cadstock" as in heavy paper?
Then he goes on to mention flight duration........well, models made from card stock....aka Cardmodels have often been converted to flying aircraft. Examples of these models can be found at a great website: www.fiddlersgreen.net ..... then click on "fun stuff" up top. Then, on that page click on the names : Dan Reno.....Peter Keller......Matt Sparks....or... Lee Drew below and to the right of the photo of the flying cardmodel in the center of the page.

Below are some photos of cardmodels converted from "static" to actual "flying" models:

L-1 9 Birddog

BF 109

Hawker Hurricane

Piper J3 Cub

Flying Bathtub

Upscaled P 47 Thunderbolt flying cardmodel

All of the above models began as "cardmodels", they may have been scaled up or even transferred to materials such as "foam"....but the designs were all originally designs of fiddlersgreen as cardmodels. Be sure to drop by the site and check them out, there are free downloads of cardmodels on the site, like the GEE BEE racer, the piper J3 cub,(with and w/o floats)as well as other cardmodels.
Now, as for competition rules....I dont know what to tell you, that would be up to the group to decide and agree upon in my opinion.
If you need links to free models that can be downloaded on the web, let me know and i will be happy to post some links which provide a wide range of aircraft.

Hope this helps, have a good day,

Greg
