My first post here so hello to everyone.........

Returning to modelling after several years and I'm building a 1/48th Tamiya Birdcage Corsair to get my hand back in, I've dived into the deepend by detailing the model using an Eduard photo etch set and using airbrushes for the first time so its been very frustrating at times but enjoyable nonetheless.

I finished painting the 3 colours and I'm pleased with the results, I have today applied the decals using Humbrol Decalfix (again a first for me) and the decals have all creased and in places have lifted away from the model, to make matters worse as the solution has dried it now appears to have left a white crust on the decals and they look ruined, in fact it would appear that all the work I've put into the model may have been in vien.

What did I do wrong?

Is it fixable?

Is Microsol and Microset any different/better?

Hrrrrrrm, Might just have been a bad batch, I use Microset myself and have seldom had any probs with it. One thing to keep in mind is that on occasion Tamiya decals can themselfs be a bit Duff and just desintegrate on you... my bet is that you didnt get a clean adhesion to the painted surface and they lifted as it dried...roughing the area with a very fine sandpaper or file helps.

I've ordered a new decal set and both Microsol and Microset, do you only use Microset only? they both seem to do the same thing or am I missing the point?

I think Microset goes on the model surface to make the decal stick better then Microsol goes over the top of the decal to make it soften into the grooves and panel lines/contours on the model surface...

Microset

A very versatile decal setting soloution that does several things to the decal to improve application. Micro Set should be applied to the model where you will be sliding off the decal. It prepares the surface with special wetting agents that cut the oils in new paint and convert the adhesive on the back. It also slightly softens the decal film to make it more flexible. 1oz bottle

Microsol

Setting solution for difficult irregular surfaces you find on models. It completely softens the decal, allowing it to drape down onto the surface, conforming perfectly and without distortion. 1oz bottle.
