I have tried an MFA 500 direct drive with a 2.5 to 1 belt reduction running on 12 volts with a 50mm two blade racing prop on my Brave boat. It is only 32 inches long and did NOT perform too well, never quite getting up on the plane so to speak.

I changed the motor for a larger Johnson motor that draws considerably more current and the result was quite good. Problem is that battery life is abysmal - draws 5 amps at full speed but looks great.

So I guess to answer your question ....... MFA 500 definitely not.
MFA 800 or 850 possibly, but speed reduction only if you are using a scale type prop.
I would honestly be temped to fit twin screws.
As regards battery .... possibly a 3700 NiMH 12 volt pack. At least this gives the chance of a 'rapid' recharge but is expensive.

Hope this helps.

Hi dave 666

I had the big Perkassa up on the plane and running for about 20min but I will warn you its not a cheap exersise to make big boats go fast
I used a single Graupner 900 Ball bearing on 24 volts keeping it simple and as light build as possable
you will find speed controllers expensive especiall when you see the amount of amps involved
so when it returns to the water it will be petrol powered using a Strimmer engine
hope this is of some help
RegardsTony

I will be fitting two MFA 850 motors with a 50mm 3 Bladed Brass prop on each with twin Brass rudders,But I still need to get the battery packs for it which will be next year now as they are about £50 each and I want 4.

Plus I will be having the same setup in my 46" Huntsman 31 when I build it next year.

we have a guy in our club who has a perkasa with twin props , he uses a pair of astro cobalt flight motors, direct drive and some 2 bladed racing props, it goes like stink, and duration is around 25 mins per set of cells, he uses the little cyclon 2volt sealed lead acid batteries made up into a 12 volt pack, one 12 volt pack for each motor, so 12 cells in total...
the set up is very good, reliable and the motors stay cool, no need for watercooling, the props are fairly small but they rev freely, so the current draw is not excessive....
it is a big boat and it does really get up and plane !
