Fabulous Dortmund.

Hands up how many were watching the Supermodels Dortmund special shown in three parts ? our German cousins certainly take their hobbies seriously, what a superb selection of models on show, the eighth scale plant and heavy haulage were outstanding examples of model engineering set amongst miniature building sites, one old boy strted his fully functioning crane in 1945 incorporating parts of Luftwaffe aircraft and tanks into its construction !
The huge model railways took on average five days each to set up coming in modules and carried in several lorries to the show,a period LMS layout in O gauge was made by some Belgium enthusiasts and by direct contrast a vast N gauge layout worked faultlessly throughout the show, once again built by German enthusiasts.
In the next hall was a display of helicopter flying in a somewhat restricted area, star was a turbine powered Bolkow BK.117 of huge proportions which purred around the safety netted hall, wonder how they get rid of the abnoxiuos fumes ?
Currently popular are half scale gliders and motor gliders, several of which were on show, not to forget a nice big Lancaster,Harrier jump jet,Dornier 335 Pfiel with cleverly disguised swastika and several P-51 Mustangs of different sizes.
I would love to have been at Dortmund, probably one of the largest model shows in the world, you could easily spend the week there taking everything in.

It was on Saturday 18th Sept, started at 1200 am on Home & Leisure and part of the model mania weekend, keep an eye open as they usually repeat these things time and again.
The presenting is a bit over the top but the programme content makes up for this misgiving.

Went to Dortmund last year (2003) with the Suface Warships Association. It really is good. I'd go again but they no longer organize a coach trip to it.
Needs someone in the Midlands area to do it, picking up passengers on the way to Dover. Then there is hotel etc to arrange..........
