Finger Trouble

Now, silly question timw, I was trying to instal MS Photo Editor from the Office 98 disc onto my machine which is running Win98 second edition. It won't let me do it, keeps teling me there is a fatal error.
I gave up on that BUT when I went back to the jpegs I had stored in various folders they have all reverted to the windows logo! Ican't remember the program they used to open in, I will have it somewhere if only I knew what it was called. Any clues?

Try "Paint" from the original MS install, it should be in the "accessories" folder on your start nenu.

Thanks for that, I can open them in paint, but I have to open paint first, select Jpeg, then the file. It used to be that I would simply double click on the file icon (whatever it was before I messed things up) and it opened. How do I get back to that happy state of affairs instead of that silly windows logo?

try right clicking the file then go to "open with" then "choose program..." select a program such as paint, check the "always use the selected programm to open this kind of file" and that should fix it.

When I right click the windows logo the image shows as, there is no "open with" option. drop down menu shows: anti virus system, winzip, send to, cut, copy, create shortcut, delete, rename, properties.left click shows only a preview.

Don’t you just love computers?

You confidently tell some one how to do some thing that works perfectly on your own machine and Hey Presto, Microsoft makes you into a liar every time!!!

I know what you mean Grahame, I get asked all the time for computer advice, sometimes even the most basic things.
The main thing people don't realise is that there is no such thing as a standard PC, They are all different inside with various make components etc..Hence the reason your statement rings very true. The only exception to this rule are Apple Machines but they don't call them PC's.
I build my own computers, so I am quite happily able to do all my own maintenance. I look after all the family PC's too. It saves a fortune in I.T. helpline costs as I can usually suss out most problems very quickly and know how to sort them out....and it all started as a hobby !!!

In answer to Kiwi's original question though, if the PC is 4 Years old or less I would seriously think about upgrading to Windows Xp as it is all geared up for photography and other media straight out of the box and a lot more stable than 98 SE. I have had Xp since it first came out in 2001 and have been more than happy with it.
Xp is cheap enough to buy now given that it is due to be replaced soon with the new version (originally codenamed Longhorn but is now called Vista, this is meant to be a very high end version of Windows for the next generation of PC's)
Most people have Mp3 players and Digital cameras etc these days and Xp will run all of these straight out of the box without having to install any additional drivers.

Certainly worth thinking about.

Regards......Mark.

Hi Guys, thanks for all the help, I solved the problem by polishing the CD, and reinstalling Office 97. Now the logos have all reverted to their previous form.
I am happiness filled!
