About every 6mnths or so if your drive is over 80 gig if samller about once a month this is ideal but dont worry if you dont do it this often just do a check to see if the disk needs a defrag

Nigel I think he wants to know where to find it

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter

I do mine at least once a week, keep it up to date and it doesn't take that long to do, and your computer will run better, and it might be worth getting another program, I use O&O Defrag much better than Windows

Also you can find "Computer Mangement" in administrivte tools in the control pannel. This program gives you more flexablitiy. Really all drives should be de-fragged every week or so. You should always leave at least one third of the drive empty for it to run smoothy.

When de-fragging check the anaylis bar, the more red stripes the more fragmented your hard-drive is. If its more than 20% red your computer is suffering badly and could do with a windows reinstall.

Barry, if you havent de-fragged in awhile then expect this process to TAKE A LONG TIME!!! Also if your doing it because you feel your system is slow i would bet money on the fact theres more than one factor causing the slow down. Nine times out of tens its some silly spyware program!

/hope some of this helps\

Barry defragging will go a lot quicker if you shut down all non critical systems/programs basically only leaving System tray and Explorer, if your staying connected its not a bad idea to leave your firewall and security running but shut down screen savers and backgrounds......
run a search for microsoft back offices program Disc keeper lite there's a free download version .......it can sort out most clogged drives quite quickly minutes but its only manual for the free version.

The real problem seems to come from the build up of registry errors......I think/know thats whats likely to be messing my system up again Ive run a couple of free trials but they wont sort it out after the first run through unless you start paying ..........the search goes on ...I must try suggesting it to Google see if they can add one to their free ware basket.

I can certainly recommend the diskkeeper lite programme as I have used it many times myself and for those of you that are unaware, the disk defragmenter supplied with windows xp is actually a licensed cut down version of this programme...if you have a look you will notice the similarities straight away except that the one from the original authors runs quicker and does happily run in the background whilst you are doing other stuff....If you download the lite version it will recognise what you have and install itself to run in favour of the windows version. I am seriously considering registering mine now as for the $19 asking price, it does a lot more when you register including defragging your virtual ram space.
Not sure what the exchange rate is at the moment but this has got to be a good buy !!!

Regards........Mark

Barry, I have also forgotten where "defrag" is, using Linux you just don't need it!

Thanks everyone,I am taking all this on board, the diskkeeper lite sounds like a good investment,I had no idea that the one on XP is a compromised defrag system, cheapskates saving an halfpenny.
