Squiffy,

That would be very usefull and much appreciated. Just bear in mind it takes me rather a long time to find anything in Windows XP so the more basic the better.

One thing it includes is pre loaded Microsoft Works, which is unecessary as I have loaded the full Office 2003 suite. I would like to get rid of it but then I loose the Microsoft Money and Microsoft Autoroute. I take it I cannot load these versions outside of the Works environment so I may be faced with the possibility of buying new copies of these.

I look forward to your Tutorials,

Richard

Richard you should be able to install works but choose custom installation this will let you choose the progs you want from the suite just make sure you install them in a different directory than office.

richard, what i will do is make the first tut on how to make XP look the same as ME. This has MANY benifits.

The pc has less graphics to display so runs faster
The menu system becomes much more realiable
The computer doesnt have to load resources for items such as the start menu
And more importantly you will be able to find things like the control pannnel.

I will try to have this online tonight for you...

Hi squiffy i was talking about Silent Hunter III game that Richard bought and i was just wondering what specs of PC do you need to play it,and i will be upgrading my RAM and graphic card on my PC so i can play games better as my Medal of Honour 'Pacfic Assault' game runs alittle slow on it.

I can play all the older Medal of Honour games ok and games like halo, NSF 'UnderGround',Ghost Recon and i have just been reading the specs to play BF2 and this is what i found:

Minimum
Requirements

System Requirements
Windows XP (32-bit) with Admin rights
1.7 GHz Pentium 4 / Athlon XP or greater
512 MB or more
460MB of HD Space
DirectX 9.0c compatible (*video)
DirectX 9.0c compatible (sound)
DVD-ROM Drive

*Video
Video card must have 128 MB or more memory and one of the following chipsets:
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 or greater
ATI Radeon 8500 or greater

Of which i would need to up my RAM to 1024MB and up the Graphics Card to a 256MB one to play BF2 from what that says.

BF2 is the most demanding and graphically intesne game on the market, for this reason the specs are obvously MUCH higher than normal games, but then as a player one is rewarded with lush graphics and photo-realisitc scenes.

Basically steven, IGNORE minimum specs on pc games, these are just there so the makers can sell more copies. A game may play with a minimum spec machine but it wont look right or play smooth etc.

To run BF2 smoothly on high you need at a bare min:

2.8ghz processor
1024mb of 400mhz ram (2gb is recommended)
2gb Hdd space (must be NTFC partitioned)
a 128mb video card, however, this is a grey area as not all 128mb cards will play the game. Basically any geforce card above a 6600GT or any nvida card above the 9700 will work. I will write a small thread about video cards are i cant explain it all in here.

Steven i would surgest that, before you upgrade you post your currant system specs (including who made each part,eg:cruial ram or nvida graphics card) on here and then we can advise you on the best parts.

99.9% of the time the cheapest place to find your parts will be www.ebuyer.co.uk. I used them for my trade accounts when building, very reliable and about 40-50% cheaper than PC world.

Ive almost finnished the first article, i will try and get it online by 10 but im a bit backed up this evening!

There should be no reason why it would have to be NTFS formated, apart from the slight speed increase, different cluster size etc, and if you are using applications that require files over 4G in size, FAT32 should be fine.

And as for video cards do some research just becasue a card has 512mb ram on board doesn't make it better than one that has 256mb, Google for video card reviews, I have a Geforce 6200 256MB and run all my games and OS at 1280x1024 without any problems
