*** No Squiffy, the computer in question is just my standby spare,it is not connected to the internet or networked ?
So where could the conflict be coming from ? baffled.

Basically your getting a hardware conflict when you plug it in, so its trying to do share resources across the devices which it cant do hence the error message. Generic drivers wont help with this either because NDIS.VXD is the same- a generic windows networking driver!

Just found this for you

This behavior can occur if another program is providing a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service for the host computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;241255

or

The error code is generated by Configuration Manager when it tries to access the Ndis.vxd file but is unable to locate it.

Right reporting back, followed those instructions to the letter and now another error has appeared as follows-
'Windows could not load the driver for this device because the computer is reporting two ISAPNP.VXD bus types ( code 2)
Contact your computer manufacturer to get an updated BIOS for your computer'.

So what do I do next gents ?

CAUSE
This is caused by the system BIOS trying to report its ISA bus type more than once during the boot process. There is no adverse affect to the system or its performance.
RESOLUTION
Contact your motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update.

If I read right you are using 98? you might be better trying to get hold of a 98SE or ME upgrade SE was a big improvement on plain old 98

Well another thing you can try is uninstall it then reboot, but go in to your BIOS settings first, look for ACPI if you see it see if you can change it to APM, save settings and load windows up again, run new hardware wizard and see if that helps

Still no good John,I have now installed Laplink,I will jump the info to my laptop and transfer it to the memory stick for use in my main computer,it seems to be the easiest solution at the moment having spent so much time on trying to install that driver.
I think that next time it needs a service I will go over to XP on that one and upgrade,I do like XP especially for graphics.
Is it a straightforward job to re-format and install XP ? could I do the job myself ? any problem areas to look out for.

You can't go wrong installing XP, you can boot of the disc and it will go through the install process, just make sure your CD-Rom drive is setup as a boot device in your BIOS.

But also what cpu and how much memory do you have in the machine, if it's running 98 it might struggle with XP
