But also what cpu and how much memory do you have in the machine, if it's running 98 it might struggle with XP |

It's above the minimum requirements, I've had it running on a lower spec machines, go for it you have nothing to loose, follow squiff's tutorials and it will speed it up |

| Will do,Nigel has come up also with a very kind offer also which makes this viable,it seems the way to go,will start extracting what is on there in readiness for a change to XP.
What a useful part of the forum this is.

| I have never come across anyone quite so greedy as this Bill Gates fellow, you would think with all of the millions that he has made out of people, he would give unlimited support to his products, without people buying his products he would be nowhere now.

| Barry,
I would be interested to hear how your upgrade to XP goes as I will be going down the same path when I get home.
Question to all, would you advise formatting the hard drive first and going for an OEM installation or can you load XP over 98SE as an upgrade effectively enough? |

| You can install over 98 but personally I would do a clean install then you don't have old bit's of programs and drivers lurking and possible causing problems |

| MS Vista is out next year and the only way Ginger Bill will be able to sell it to the masses is if he stops support for XP.

| So far I've read Vista will be out in either June, July or October (5 year anniversary of XP) at some point you might have no option but to upgrade with Vista only games like Halo 2 or programs needing Directx10 which won't be available on XP, I think I will let them iron out a few bugs before getting it.
Oh and even when it is released the new file system WinFS will ship separately as they still are no where near finishing it, so you won't get the full benefit from it |

| | Guest | DO NOT EVER EVER EVER INSTALL XP OVER WIN98 OR ANY OTHER OS WITHOUT DOING A FULL FORMAT FIRST!
Theres a long list of reasons why this will screw your pc up and slow it down! Ill be here forever if i describe them all. The best thing to do is load the XP cd and then use the formatting wizard on the disk. It will then autoformat your drive and also change the partitioning to ntfs.
Barry- your pc will run XP but it wont run it too well as really XP needs 150+mb always free to work, as you have less than 512 in the machine to start with this will hinder it. Do you know what ram it is? (ie c2300) as i have lots of spare sticks so can send you some!
As for the mem stick:
Its definatly a conflict, it seems that the network drivers they are using for it clash with the DCHP drivers that SE oftern uses. Try these steps below and then try reinstalling the stick: Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab, remove any program providing a DHCP service by clicking the program, and then clicking Add/Remove. On the Windows Setup tab, double-click Internet Tools, and then click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box. Click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If your still having problems after this then its going to get pretty complicated to fix and its then up to you as to weather we push on or you just install XP...
EDIT___ Guys- do you reccon the standalone USB disk drivers (ie:sony DSC) will work if he flashs the key? |
