Usenet

P****d off with Wanadoo, my ISP
Used to have access to Newsgroups. On March 17th thay cut their link with the Usenet Server, no more newsgroups. Hadn't even the courtesy to make the event known.
I use the 2 meg Broadband on Wanadoo, but I do miss having access to the usenet newsgroups, especially the modelling ones.
It looks like a lot of ISPs are doing the same and you have to access Usenet via a subscription service paid for by monthly agreement in US $

What are you guys doing?

Ken,it is happening all over the internet, what was once available as part of a package is no longer a freebie,NTL chopped our TV package back and slimmed it down so that now you have to pay for programmes that we got used to,many individuals are now setting up 'part free part fee' web sites, this defeats the whole object of the internet, whereby information is made available for all and communities are created just like this one to help others with like interests. So in effect they are trying to offer less, but ask us to pay more for services set up to attract us to their wares,a sorry state of affairs, but it is a growing trend.

Ken,
I am with Wanadoo too on the same package, I must admit I was unaware they were going to drop the usenet groups too, I just suddenly found the other day that I could not access them anymore.....now I know why.
There are plenty of Usenet programmes out there, looks like I will have to try one of those now.

Regards......Mark

Via the ISPs access to the Usenet server gave the ability to get to lots & lots of various newsgroups imbedded in the cost of your ISP subscription.
Now the ISPs seem to have reached a "cartel" type agreement to pull the plug on getting to Usenet, the only way is via an added subsciption.
The cost & fiddling around in doing this is going to cause a lot of newsgroup participants not to bother anymore. So even if you do pay your money and subscribe to USenet access, the content from the UK will be very diluted.
Will it be worth the bother?

I use Newshosting which runs in at around £8 a month and have done for nearly a year now, find it much more reliable than any of the freebies out there. It's not that bad a deal really as i also run the feeds onto my website as an extra benefit for the members.

I used to have newsfeeds on here but I just ended up with 100's of posts that was too hard to moderate
