| USB Hubs. Yesterday I went to download some pictures from my digital camera and I could not get any results, after re-loading the driver again it still would not work, traced the problem to a faulty USB Hub which although the power light was on it was failing to function, this is the third hub that I have had in the past 18 months, has anyone else had any problems with these ? they do seem to fail at an alarming rate.
Having checked my camera on another computer I am happy thankfully that was not the problem so have just purchased a new hub on E-bay.
Another strange thing happened just before this failure,my computer went sluggish,I instantly did a check for anything nasty present,it was fine,so took the lid off and did a dusting session, could not get at the fans which seem to be sealed ? but sucked out what I could put it back together and it works fine and back to speed .
Dont know whether the hub failure was linked to the above incident, but I dont suppose you can rule it out ? anyone else had problems like this ?

| The more usb devices you have the more power it will suck out of your computer, how many devices do you have? and what size psu have you got in? I've just put a 650w in mine should keep me going for a while, if you have under 400w then it might be time to put a new one in, the bigger the better

| John,I have been trying to see what size the psu is to no avail,is there any way of telling from my computer itself ? it was upgraded the last time I had a video card fitted, its a whopping great thing,I am running-Mouse,scanner ( when needed ),cam with one spare socket for the camera, surely that should cope with those ? I as wondering if the psu overloaded the hub causing it to do some damage, the power light still functions but it does not seem to be drawing any current from the computer ?

| As far as I know you can't tell what size psu you have from your computer, you might have to take the cover off the case there should be a sticker on it saying how many watts it is

| Barry on the side or top of the psu there will be a sticker telling you what the maximum poer out put in watts your psu will supply !! please take this with a pinch of salt because it doesnt state continuous power ! usb hubs especially belkin eat power and i would suggest a 650 watt supply anything less is unreliable in a lot of cases Usb by its very nature draws power for its own devices and can slowdown your system or indeed make it crash or reboot at will |

| Thanks Nigel,I will take a look the minute that I get a chance, just about to try the hub on my other computer to see what happens, does the power plug make much difference ? that light is still on but it just seems to be dead at the USB socket end ?

| Found the problem,I looked at my installation log, last week I installed Real Player,I uninstalled that and everything is back to normal, the hub is working again plus my digital camera, must have been a conflict somewhere ? what do you think of that ?

| real player, and quicktime (more so) plug themeselves into everything in your computer, they are both quite annoying.
Quicktime was installed with my ipod's itunes, it desided to intergrate itself into everything through the registery.maybe realy player told the computer to run every kind of media on your computer, and obviously yor digital camera is a media devise but images cant be opened in real player, creating yet another "domino effect" (alot of these mentioned recently!!!)
just a theory, maybe someone with more computer knowledge than me can give a better explenation |
