i think squiffy ment the colour adjustments (red/green and blue? is it? cant remember....where you can change the saturation of each colour, i know what he means and how to do it....just cant remember what exact colours it is, but this wont change what colours the scanner pics up squiff!

try e-mailing the people who make your scanner for sugestions?

Richard, i know the scanners only scanning in red, but provided the picture is correct, gammut, tones, contrast etc all one would need to do is change the colour, from RGB to B&W.

Barry you can always send the pictures to me on MSN and i will re-adjust them for you, its a simple 2 minute job!

Another thought, have you checked your not just viewing one "channel" barry? Certain programs like to display either the red, green or blue channels on their own and then you have to click through to get a true RGB image. Some of the early cannons did this.

Redtreble, i have no idea what you mean "same menus" they are different programs unless your talking about the windows twain aquire window?

Thanks everyone for these useful tips and advice,I need to get back to the scanner and have another fiddle with the settings to see if I can get some results with the B & W negatives using these ideas, will get back with my findings after further investigation.

***The whole image comes out as a negative in red, instead of the required greyscale, when I try it next if it does the same I will post the image here so that you can see the result.

try putting a bit of paper behind it, its a long shot but it might be because the light is too bright for the negative it is producing the red image, maybe some kind of background might help

like i said its a long shot but maybe worth a try?

im thinking here like red eye on a photo, the light reflects off the retena, possibly could be the same kind of thing, the colour on the negative is not strong enough compared to the film it is on?

i dont know, just an idea....

All sorted, this evening I scanned a B & W neg, settyings were Negative>Colour ( remember no facility for B & W on the negs ) it came out a red tinge as before, however then noticed when I saved it that the paint programme supplied had a grey scale setting, saved it as that and it did the trick ! so all of the time it was possible but not from the actual scan box itself for some reason, anyway really pleased now as this means that I can scan really old negs that have been in their envelopes for close on 50 years, and yes you will see many of these used here on Scale-Models for all to share and enjoy.
Thank you to everyone for their combined efforts, you just dont know what the computer help section here means to me,always someone to lend an helping hand when in trouble, invaluable.

Several!!!

Firstly, the tone of your post is really rather unpleasant, people here are all really friendly, theres no need for that! (even more so if your new!)

Twain drivers can be modified for specific software or devices as the twain system is stand alone to that of the device drivers.

Photoshop uses ITS OWN twain aquire drivers to set an image. This is very useful when dealing with out of gammut colours that your 4.99 argos scanner has trouble with. File>Import>twain_32. Not to mention the large range of twain specific plugins available these days.

PSP uses the stock windows drivers thus doesnt allow so many variables! Try using PSP to do a networked aquire, its not so simple!

BARRY- Brilliant news matey, so glad you got the problem sorted! Theres nothing worse than "niggly" pc problems! As usal if you ever have a problem, no matter how small just send me a pm or msn and i will happily do my uttermost to sort it. Theres no end to the amount of help you have given me its nice to return the favour!

You might also be intrested in looking into "infared neg cleaning". Its a process which shines infared light onto the neg to show up any scratchs or marks, one can then easily edit them out. That or use your built in software.

hiya barry what i have done in the past is scanned them in first into a folder on the computer then used paint shop pro 8 to adjust the size and adjust little things. mabe trying that first will help if not then photoshop is not hard to get hold of. i could get it for you if you have not got it and send it to you if you want.
best regards Char
