Camera and MP3 player not showing in my computer

Can anyone help.
Normally when I connect a USB device it shows up in 'My Computer', but recently when I connect my camera or MP3 player no icons appear, so I can't up/download to them. When I plug them in the computer 'beeps' as though everything is OK.
I have gone to Control/System/Device manager and they are listed, I then check properties and it says everything is OK.
All my internal drives (6 off hard drives), floppy and both DVD drives show OK. When I connect my small external hard drive that shows no problem.
I have tried all the drivers, update/rollback/uninstall etc. Have also done a repair run, and everything is fully updated.
Only got one strand of hair left

I had something similar to this happen a while back,it turned out to be a conflict with Real Player and Quicktime, once I got rid of those everything went back to normal, have you uploaded anything like this ?
I now keep a log of everything that I load up or change on my computer,it really proves useful, think back carefully, have you changed anything ? the beep certainly sounds like a conflict situation.

Sorry, it isn't a beep, but the 'ding dong' when an accessory has been registered and logged on.
No real player but do have quicktime, been on there as long as the machine has been running, no problems.
Nothing new has gone on for months, this has only happened in the last couple of days.

Howdy Bogstandard,

Can you access the device (camera/mp3) by going to "Start" > Programs > then to the program that is relative to the device? ie... HP cameras have a program called "Hewlitt Packard" in the program files. If I hook up my camera via usb, then I click start>programs>hewlitt packard>hp camera.
You should be able to access the device using the above method with your device. I know thats not the way you have always done it and I realize that this doesnt explain the cause of your trouble, or even fix your trouble, but atleast you could use the device.
If the above doesnt work, then I would suggest an "uninstall" just be sure to go to "my computer">"control Panel">add/remove programs to do the uninstall. Then, do a re install of the devices programs.

I hope this helps,

Greg

Hi Greg,
The items I am mainly trying to access (MP3 player) don't come with install software, they are detected by the computer and show a shortcut in My Computer

It detects them as external drives in my computer...check you aint got a dodgy usb cable...you'll get the didng dong of connectiing but any subsequence dodgy connecting will screw things about....also check yr battery power.,....... also make sure you are plugging the unit into the same usb slot that you normally use. there is a known bug that when you istall drivers for xdrive/cam/keyfob/ etc to one usb socket it wont recognise or install fresh to another....

Have you done a windows-update the last time? I´ve had a similar problem in the past. Could happen after every windows-update to any component of your pc! (thank you Mr. Gates!!)

Microsoft doesn´t like it, but i removed the auto-update. So you can decide by yourself, what to install, and what not. Not all what comes from them is really neccesary and usefull (like SP2 for XP, what caused many problems)

I´ve handeled it with removing the component, shut down the PC, restart, new plug in (and then it doesn´t really matter, which USB slot is used)

Ralf

Silly question .... is it Windows XP?

Win98 and ME did not do an autodetect and had to have the device plugged in and on when the PC booted.

Sorry, but ME does autodetect! I didn´t have any problems with "plug and play" in the past.

I´ve had running XP, but throw it away, as far as i could.

If you´ve got hardware, older than 5 years, you couldn´t find working drivers for XP!!

Ralf

Many thanks for all your replies, now going offline for a day to start afresh.
Its not the reinstalling XP that takes the time, but putting all the programs and data back on.
Will let you know the outcome.
