Optical Mouse Playing Up!

Hi guys.
I have a small problem with my mouse. The scroll wheel has started to work on it's own! The screen scrolls up and down occasionally and it's very touchy to use. It's a microsoft optical one (no ball underneath-red light) with a cord. Does anyone have a simple fix or should I lash out for a newie? My whole unit including the mouse is just over a year old and not under warantee as it's had mods by other than the seller etc.
Jason

My optical mouse has had so much use that the slider grommet feet have worn down ! it drags across my mouse mat, really must buy a new one, once you have used one nothing else is as good.

I've had my Microsoft one for years and had no problems so far. The pads are showing some sign of wear though an do have to be lightly cleaned every so often. One of my better computer purchases! Pity my browser (aol's version of ie explorer) didn't behave better. It's evolved a mind of its own recently. And don't mention Serif Webplus 10. Been waiting an age for a patch on what's a newly released programme that won't work with the older AMD Athlon processors - not that they tell you that when you buy it! Still they now say it'll be available next week as it's back in beta testing (again!)

Someone once estimated how many miles his mouse had travelled in one year of use,it worked out at a staggering few hundred miles of use ! imagine taking your mouse for a walk that distance and see how she would stand up ? my original mouse wore the brass roller out with a deep groove where the ball bearing rode, the ball bearing is now firmly planted into the nose of one of my models to keep her nose down, how tedious cleaning the goop off those ball bearings becomes, these little devices work so hard without us realising it.

I dug out the mouse that came with the PC and it's not too bad, so I'm using it. It's optical too. I initially didn't use it as it has a wierd narrow shape, but I'm getting use to it.
BTW Has anyone downloaded the new Internet Explorer 7 yet? I have and I like! The tabs are very handy. I can keep Imageshack open on it's own tab and click to it to upload pics, then back to my post etc. It has some interesting mods too. Check your Windows Update page if you haven't got it yet.
