That would be the easy option, or read this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434 it will explain how to trouble shoot in safe mode, there's also some more info here http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

Hi Charlotte,

Another common cause for this is that you have a lot of programmes all trying to start up at the same time as windows when you boot up your computer.

This can be solved quite easily by turning some of them off and only starting them when you need to....you will notice the speed difference straight away.

Ok here's how you do it:

When your machine is up and running click on start and then Run

In the box that comes up, type in msconfig and press ok.

You will now get a new box come up with a load of tabs across the top.

The first tab to look at is the one called services, click on that

At the bottom of that box you will see a little box that says Hide All Microsoft Service, tick that box and this will stop you messing up Windows.

You will be left with a list of the other programmes which do not really to load at bootup time, untick all the ones you dont want to start at bootup. I usually only leave my AVG Antivirus ticked and that is it.

When you are happy with your choices, click the apply button and then OK.

You will now get a box offering to restart the computer...do this.

Last but not least when you reboot, you will see a box come up saying you used msconfig, put a tick in the little box at the bottom where it says dont show this again, Click ok and you are done.

If this affects any programmes you like to use just go back to msconfig to the same tab and retick the box to turn them back on and follow the same steps...easy.

Might be handy to print this out if you can.

Regards......Mark.

How do you know when XP is failing?

Normally as soon as it's finished installing...

Lol at Alan's answer above,

For those of you who like the look of the Apple Mac OS, I recently found a program that will make Win Xp look like the Latest Mac OS. You still get to keep your original task bar etc but you also get the Mac Docking Bar which does work & you can place where you like (Exactly as has been copied on Vista) The whole look is more than eye Candy...it actually runs quicker too even from Boot-up. I have tried something similar before but you had to do the whole windows hack yourself to do it.

This program will do it all for you and if you don't like it, you get the option to set a restore point to Win Xp during the installation routine.

All the Mac icons are there, in my view much better than the Xp ones and so much nicer to look at....Even when you boot up the pc, people think you have a mac as the Win Xp screen with the blue scrolling bar is replaced by an Apple screen....and it is quicker.

If you want to check it out, here is the link:

www.snapfiles.com/get/Flyakiteosx.html

It is completely free and I have scanned it for Spyware and there is None !!! (The review site also confirms no adware or spyware with this program)

Regards......Mark.

Char,

I just like the eye Candy look of OSX, although the Mac is actually better for my main job (Music) Having said that, I would prefer to build a High Spec PC and let it do the same job for me. The Majority of the Music Software I use is now available for the Mac but that has only been recently...No point in going out and buying it again if I already have the latest Version running perfectly well on my PC...Just extra expense that could be better invested elsewhere.

This is a Home Built Machine I am on now...having gone down that route and upgrading / repairing several other machines for other people. I will only build my own now....Far better spec machines built at much cheaper prices than off the shelf ones.

I will be building a new dedicated music pc shortly which will not be running Vista but sticking to Win Xp. There are a number of items that can be switched off in Xp and a few other little tweaks for a dedicated Music Machine......If you did these on a normal everyday machine you would probably lose a number of favourite things including internet capabilty, as this machine does not require it.. This allows the machine to be more efficient for it's primary job.

I have certainly become the local PC technician around here for Family and Friends and workmates too.

It's almost like another Branch of Modelling and nice to see the finished item working.... And you don't need Tech Support IF it goes wrong.

Regards......Mark.

Sorry to hear that Char,

Re-Formatting and Reinstalling is such a pain to do.....especially if you have quite a few updates to download. On the Bright side, though, I always use that as an excuse to download all the latest drivers for everything else that is in my PC and at least once it's all done, everything is running smoothly again.

I hope you didnt lose any work or photos, that is always the worst bit, especially if you didn't back them up first

Hopefully by now everything is done and running fine

Regards......Mark.
